Interactive Planets of Space: 1889

Hi everyone,

I hope you’re all having a great weekend as we move towards our next Stretch Goal of making the core rulebook nice and colourful?

This is just a quick update to show you something that you might enjoy.

A German fan team has been using Google Earth to make an interactive atlas of the populated planets of the Space: 1889 Universe.

They’ve produced a video in English (see below) but most of their website is mainly in German.

I, personally, think it’s a fantastic resource for the setting and hope you can get plenty of use out of it too!

Hope you like it!

Venus and Savage Worlds!

Thanks to you all we have just passed our second Stretch Goal – an all-new 32 page adventure called “Thunders of Venus” which is being penned by Steve Long.

This not only unlocks the adventure, which is going to be given free in PDF to every pledger for the Digital Rulebook Plus and the Rulebook Plus onwards, but also means our first new print Add-On is also unlocked… “Double Adventure Book 1” featuring both “The Order of the Invisible Eye” by John Wick and “Thunders of Venus” by Steve Long.

In addition to this we can also announce that the adventures that are being unlocked in this Kickstarter are *also* going to be available as Savage Worlds editions, supporting Pinnacle Entertainment’s “Space 1889: Red Sands” setting they released back in 2010.

SAVAGE_WORLDS_LICENSED

PDFs of the Savaged versions of the adventures will be included in the PDF deal, whilst print Add-Ons will be available to purchase separately. So you’ll get two versions of the adventure in PDF for both the Ubiquity system and the Savage Worlds system at no extra cost!

NEW ADD-ONS

Double Adventure Book 1 (Space: 1889 Uniquity) – Print version £10 (@ $15.00)

Double Adventure Book 1 (Red Sands Savage Worlds) – Print version £10 (@ $15.00)

Both of the above adventures will be @ £11.99 each (@ $17-18) to buy after the Kickstarter campaign.

Now Steve Long isn’t the only stretch goal dealing with Venus… yes, that’s right, we’re returning to Venus for the £34,000 Stretch Goal….

LOCKED £34,000 – THE VENUS SOURCEBOOK!

The Venus Sourcebook will be roughly 190 pages and will not only feature expanded information about the history, geography, flora and fauna of Venus but also take a close look at the human settlements of the German, British, Italian and Russian colonists as well as the native population of lizardmen (and dinosaurs!). We’ll also be revealing ancient secrets that lie beneath the impenetrable jungles and dangerous swamps that surround them. This book will feature information about living, exploring and conquering the wilderness of Venus, as well as new rules, new archetypes, and hints for gamemasters to run extended campaigns on the greenhouse of our solar system.

Every pledger for the Digital Rulebook Plus and the Rulebook Plus onwards will receive a pdf of this sourcebook for free as soon as it is available.

LOCKED ADD-ON £34,000 – THE VENUS SOURCEBOOK PRINT EDITION!

The Venus Sourcebook will be available as a purchasable black & white softcover add-on for backers who will be sent it ahead of the general retail release! This will be added to the ‘Add-Ons’ section when unlocked!

Here’s a look at the cover art for the Venus Sourcebook

Venus Sourcebook

We still have three more Stretch Goals between now and our return to Venus, which we can now start moving towards…

£23,000 – The Core Rulebook becomes colour

£26,000 – some new full colour artwork for the rulebook plus all backers of the physical rulebooks will be sent a free 24 Sheet Character Pad along with their rulebook!

£29,000 – The Gamemaster’s Screen & NPC Booklet (free in PDF to backers of the Digital Rulebook Plus and Rulebook Plus and higher levels – also available as a Print Add-On once unlocked).

Please help spread the word about the campaign, and also the new Savage Worlds Adventure options and the Venus Sourcebook, by participating in or starting threads on forums you frequent and mentioning our campaign on Twitter, Facebook, G+ or anywhere else you hang out where friends may be interested!

Many thanks for all of your support, I’m sure we can get to Venus and beyond, and we’ll have some more news for you all soon…

Artwork Part One – Interior Artwork

While planning the German version of the new Space: 1889 rulebook we tried to emulate the artwork typical for the Victorian era. After endless quests for the right artist(s) for this job, we finally found them in the most unexpected places – Finland and Canada. 😉

Most of the black & white interior artwork in the rulebook was done by Finnish artist Juha Makkonen. I actually don’t know for sure how I found him back then, but working with him was very easy going and you can see by the artwork he has done for us that he really liked working on this kind of stuff. He even admitted that he spent way too much time on getting the illustrations exactly “right” than he should have done. You can find more of his artwork on his website here.

And here is some of his artwork:

aphid

brontosaurus

raygun

As we planned more and more books, it became clear that we would need more artists to get everything done. Our second search lead us to rpg-industry veteran Eric Lofgren, who is also great in copying the Victorian copperplate engraving style we wanted for Space: 1889. You can find his b&w artwork as well as various covers and color illustrations here.

And also some samples of his work:

oblivion

time_machine

steam_colossus

But we also needed full color artwork for the archetypes: These were done by German artist Mia Steingraeber, who has already worked for us on a lot of other projects. You can find more of her artwork here.

You should already have seen her artwork for the core rulebook, since the originals are available as pledge rewards for this very project. So here we’d like to show you something new – one of the archetypes for the forthcoming German sourcebook for Venus 🙂

The next part of the artwork updates will cover the amazing cover artwork and new maps for Mars and Venus we got done by some very talented chaps! So stay tuned and look out!

Unlocked: “The Order of the Invisible Eye” Adventure by John Wick

The Order of the Invisible Eye” by John Wick is now unlocked!

Next up is “Thunders of Venus” by Steven S. Long!

£18,000 – UNLOCKED!!!! Adventure (32 page) : “The Order of the Invisible Eye” by John Wick (Legend of the Five Rings; 7th Sea; Houses of the Blooded). Mars is the new land of opportunity. It calls to those who wish to make a fresh start, away from the turmoils and controversies of Earth. But some come to Mars with dark intents. On Earth, Hiram Burnside was a washed up occultist. Kicked out of every esoteric order, he brought his small group of followers to Mars and has begun converting both the colonists and natives to his own brand of “esoteric truth”. But what exactly is Burnside’s “truth”? And why do dead bodies follow him wherever he goes?

You can learn more about John Wick at www.johnwickpresents.com

Every pledger for the Digital Rulebook Plus and the Rulebook Plus onwards will receive a pdf of this adventure for free as soon as it is available.

New Stretch Goals! Full Colour Core Book, Gamemaster’s Screen and more

As we’re within a few hundred pounds (as I write this) of unlocking our first Stretch Goal, a 32-page adventure by John Wick, I thought I’d reveal a few more stretch goals that will hopefully be following, including making the core rulebook – in all of its variations – full colour; which has been a popular request in messages and also comments on various forums 🙂

So, here are the £23k, £26k and £29k stretch-goals!

LOCKED £23,000 – The core rulebook (in all its formats) will now contain colour archetypes, maps, and have some new full colour artwork included in addition to having sepia-ish pages and the original art from the German edition!

LOCKED £26,000 – More new full colour art for the core rulebook PLUS every backer of a physical rulebook (all variations) will be sent a pad of 24 Character Sheets FREE when we despatch the rulebooks to them. All Retailer pledges will receive one pad per book.

Additional pads will be available as purchasable add-ons for backers who will be sent them ahead of the general retail release! This will be added to the ‘Add-Ons’ section when unlocked!

The PDF Character Sheet will be available as a free PDF to all – backers and non-backers alike.

LOCKED £29,000 – Gamemaster Screen & NPC Booklet! This four-panel Space: 1889 Gamemaster’s Screen made of solid cardboard provides you with a clear overview of all the important rules and tables you need during a game session – and at the same time keeps your players group from peeking. Also included is a 32-page booklet featuring descriptions and detailed statboxes of more than 60 Non-Player Characters. Whether you need simple thugs or an experienced officer, a High Martian warrior chief or a Venusian shaman, a smart hotelier or a graceful geisha: In this handy booklet you will find the right character for every possible or impossible situation. Completed by many examples and practical advice, it offers you an easy and comfortable way to fill the world of Space: 1889 with more life.

Every pledger for the Digital Rulebook Plus and the Rulebook Plus onwards will recieve a pdf of both the screen and NPC booklet for free as soon as it is available. Physical copies will be available as a purchasable add-on for backers who will be sent them ahead of the general retail release! This will be added to the ‘Add-Ons’ section when unlocked!

The German version of the Screen and NPC Booklet is currently at the printers so we can show you what the Screen will look like…

Funded!

Woohoo!

Whilst we were sleeping the Space: 1889 RPG Kickstarter passed it’s funding goal!

Thanks so much to every one so far!

Now we’re en route to our first stretch goal, “The Order of the Invisible Eye” – a new 32-page adventure by John Wick which every ‘Digital Rulebook Plus’, or ‘Rulebook Plus and higher,’ backer will get the PDF of as part of their package!

Thanks for your support so far and more updates after the weekend!

Angus, Patric and everyone at Chronicle City and Clockwork Publishing!

Art and Creator Pledges

Hi everyone,

Thanks for supporting the campaign so far. It’s been an incredible first 30 hours!

Patric and I have revised the Art and Creator Pledge Levels slightly so backers at those levels will now be able to choose which rulebook to be sent out of the standard, faux leather or real leather. Previously each of those levels just came with the standard option but we wanted to say thanks to anyone who decides to back us at that level and give them the option at no extra cost.

The Art Pledges have been changed in the right hand bar and central campaign text, whilst the Creator pledge has just been updated in the central campaign text as we can’t change pledge level descriptions once someone has backed that level.

I just wanted to send out a quick update to let you all know of the change.

Thanks again for all the support and looking forward to the next 37 days and beyond!

Angus

So what’s included in the rulebook exactly?

The basic English rulebook will be a translation of the German one released last year by Uhrwerk Verlag. There may be a few changes, as we reach stretchgoals, but that’s something we will reveal later on.

The rulebook will have a page count of about 260 pages (the German one has 264, but English texts are normally a bit shorter, but we will balance this with some nice new artwork 🙂 ). It will be a hardcover with a b&w interior and full-color endpapers showing the maps of Mars and Venus.

The text will be roughly divided into the following:

  • 65 pages about the colonial powers on Earth as well as other cultures and societies of our home planet
  • 42 pages about Mars
  • 26 pages describing Venus
  • 5 pages about Mercury
  • 5 pages about the Ether
  • 85 pages for character creation, 8 archetypes, general rules and combat rules
  • 15 pages for equipment and inventions

The rest will be an extensive glossary, index, reading and viewing lists and the like.

What has changed about the background?

There is one point we’d like to address in particular, because we were already asked about it several times on the first day of our Kickstarter:

In the background section of Space: 1889, the description of Earth is not as centered on the British Empire as it was in the original version. Sure, the big colonial powers take up the largest part of the background information, but we have included information on the main countries of every continent to some extent.

Furthermore, we are aiming to make sure that most of the adventures we publish will generally be playable with any kind of character, as well as mixed groups with characters from different cultures and/or planets. When you look at the pledge rewards, you will see that there are even two Martian archetypes.

We also made sure that no single Earth nation is depicted as the “bad guy” in general. After all, that’s what High Martians are for 😉

There will, of course, be the occasional evil German scientist trying to take over the world, but we won’t have all Germans act as proto-Nazis, or all Chinese people dumbed down to the typical Asian stereotype and so on.
